Lifestyle diseases are associated with the way a person lives. They include heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and diseases associated with tobacco use and alcohol and drug use. As many of these illnesses are caused or exacerbated by lifestyle choices, almost all could be improved with successful behavioral change.
Beacon Health Options Living Well with Illness is a unique behavioral change program that addresses chronic conditions. It goes beyond the traditional disease management model with its focus on education and medication compliance. The program provides a holistic approach to help people facilitate behavioral change.
Beacon Health Options’ coaching model is designed with a twofold focus. The first is to support the organization (client company) with activities and strategies to achieve a culture of health within their organization. The second is to partner with members who have a lifestyle disease in a thought-provoking and creative process.
Life coaches work with participants to help facilitate lifestyle improvement and to inspire them to achieve their optimum health and wellness potential. Coaches go beyond the role of a health educator: They provide support, accountability, and tools to promote lifestyle changes.
The path to success starts with emotional wellness. Life coaches understand the stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and the impact of grief as one copes with lifestyle illness. They are able to assess the needs of participants and make referrals to medical providers, therapists, psychiatrists, EAP and work-life and lifestyle illness-specific support groups.
